France: Light aircraft will be obliged to carry emergency beacons from the 1st January 2009

A government order dated 26 March 2008, published in the JO (French Official Journal) dated 3 April makes carrying twin-frequency "406 and 121.5 MHz" (ELT or PLB) emergency beacons mandatory from the 1st of January 2009 for all aeroplanes and all helicopters moving in French airspace (with exceptions for the following categories: CNRA (restricted navigation home built), CDNR (restricted navigation), AC (restricted navigation collector's aircraft), CNSK (special navigation certificate for kit-built aircraft), ULM (ultra light motorised))

The DGAC (French Civil Aviation Authority) authorises the use of different types of beacons, including portable personal beacons (PLB) with integrated GPS.

ELT or PLB?

ELT (Emergency Location Transmitter)

This beacon is linked to an aircraft (tail number: registration identification). The alert system triggers automatically in the event of a crash (or can be triggered manually). This type of beacon is aviation-specific.

PLB (Personal Locator beacon)

A portable personal beacon is not linked to the aircraft, but it has a unique series code (for example, associated with the details of the club to contact in the event of an emergency). It is only triggered manually. This beacon is useful for people who travel in different types of environment: land, sea and air.
